Mindful Parenting: How to Introduce Your Kids to Meditation and Create a Calmer Home

Guided Meditations: Play guided meditations for your child, such as those designed specifically for kids, to help them learn how to focus their minds and relax. Encourage them to participate in these meditations with you.


Draw and Color: have your child take out paper and crayons or markers and ask them to imagine a specific scene, and have them use their imagination to draw how they picture the scene or prompt. Breathing Exercises: Teach your child simple deep breathing exercises and make it a routine to practice together, such as inhaling deeply and counting to five, then exhaling slowly and counting to five.


Sensory Activities: Practice different sensory activities. Some of these activities can include:


1. Smelling essential oils - get 5 different essential oils to have your child smell each one and have them describe what it smells like, ask them do any pictures or images pop into their mind when they smell that oil, does it remind them of food, a particular memory, etc?


2. Feeling different textures - gather different textures such as stones, feathers, soft blanket, etc and ask them to close their eyes and describe what the object feels like.


3. Practice Focus - Help your child to focus their mind by getting their favorite squishmallow and take out a journal. Have your child write about their squishmallow and all the things they notice about their squish mellow - color, size, texture, facial expression, etc and create a short story how the squishmallow likes to be relaxed and calm.


Mindful Movement: Motivate your child to engage in mindful movement activities. Start by prompting them to observe their heart rate. Next, encourage them to run around, do jumping jacks or jump on a trampoline for one minute, and then measure their heart rate again. Help them notice how their heart rate increased after performing the movement. Discuss with them if they have observed times when their heart rate is calm and what triggers an increase in heart rate. Encourage them to recall situations when they noticed their heart rate was calm or increased and ask them how they felt about it.


Gratitude Practices: Teach your child about the practice of gratitude and encourage them to take part in daily gratitude exercises, such as journaling, sharing what they are thankful for, or expressing gratitude before meals. These practices can help children develop a positive outlook and increase their overall sense of well-being.
